Newsletter, Spring/Summer 2017

Hello Everyone,

The sky is a brilliant blue. There is no more snow on the ground here in Kincardine. The trees are casting shadows unique to early spring when their branches are still bare and the sunlight is bold and clear without the green of the leaves to filter it. The air is crisp but the sun is warm. The day is pregnant with the promise of summertime.

My workshop underwent some renovations this winter. We moved it to the other side of the house, upgraded the electrical and the lighting, put in brand new shelving and added an extra work table. My new space is small and bright, clean and efficient; just perfect.

I’ve been enjoying putting together my spring and summer line. I’ve decided to offer my moss green again this spring along with a group in pastel pink, and one in denim blue. I’ve chosen to warm up my yellow group this season to a soft butter shade accented by brass wire and amber-coloured glass. Also look for a neutral colour group of crisp white, clear glass, silver metal and grey glass accented with pearls, shells, crystals and stone.

I am looking forward to connecting with many of you in the coming months. I will be starting my 2017 show schedule with two of my favourite local maple festivals followed by London’s delightful annual Good Friday Spring Craft Show. I am still waiting for a response from the coordinators of one or two shows but the Spring/Summer schedule enclosed is mostly complete. Keep an eye on my website for any additions or changes to the list. www.racheljoyvanrooyenjewellery.com

Preparing for Spring

Posted on 27 January, 2017 at 14:45 Comments comments (0)

Good Morning Everyone!

It has been quite a mild January so far, but today it is very cold. The cat is a little annoyed with me. He seems to be convinced that I am responsible for this turn in the weather. He steps outside into the swirling snow, turns back and looks up at me as if to say, "What is going on here? Why in the world don't you turn up the heat?" He simply cannot accept the reality of winter. He shakes off his paws and stalks indignantly back into the house heading straight for his cozy bed.

It's time for me to snuggle up to the heat of my torch and kiln. I am ready to turn my thoughts to springtime. Brian has brought me a bouquet to tulips to help set the mood. They look lovely and cheerful sitting in a white and blue pottery vase on my work station.

I am working with fresh, mossy spring green shades this week. I am making glass beads this morning and this afternoon I will put some wooden beads into a dye bath. Next week I'll be moving on to pastel pink. I'll also be working on a neutral colour group involving paper white, clear glass, crystal, pearl, grey and silver.

I haven't decided on my other colours yet. I have a number of ideas percolating. I like to decide as I roll along. I'll keep you posted.

Speaking of keeping you posted, to those of you on my mailing list, I will be sending out hard copies of my bi-annual newsletter early in March. Around that same time I will be posting my 2016 Spring/Summer schedule here on my website under my "Coming Events" tab.

Talk soon!

Rachel Joy.

Hello Everyone,

As I write this I am surrounded by packed boxes. Next week we are moving to our new house. We are delighted. We have managed to find a home in just the neighbourhood we were hoping for, only a few blocks up from the beach. (If we stand at the end of the driveway, and tilt our heads just so, we can even enjoy a lake view.) The house we have bought is a basic, sturdy 70’s bungalow just ripe for a facelift. I enjoy designing interiors and Brian has had lots of experience with landscaping and home renos, so together we’ll make a good team. We are gleefully anticipating the DIY challenges ahead of us.

I have always been interested in interior design. I have subscriptions to at least six magazines at any one time. (I’m old school. Looking at digital versions, for me, just doesn’t hold the same ability to inspire that turning actual glossy, paper pages does.) I love it when I walk over to the mailbox and find our little cubby stuffed full of my favourite periodicals. I rush back into the house, make a hot cup of tea and sit down for a few minutes to enjoy them. I’m all about colour, texture and shape. Interior Design magazines fuel my creativity and help to influence the way I put my collections together.

This season I am working with some vibrant new colour combinations. I’ve blended together several shades of green from a soft, pale Endive to rich, deep Basil. I am also working on a blushing floral group, one in classic denim, and also a vibrant yellow collection. I’ve chosen to off-set these colours with clean white glass, iridescent shell, and crystal.

Please find attached to this letter a list of my up-coming shows for Spring/Summer 2016. As always, please note that a number of the shows are marked ‘Unconfirmed’. I have noted them this way because I am waiting for confirmation of inclusion from the organizers. Please check the ‘Coming Events’ tab at the top of the title page on my website (www.racheljoyvanrooyenjewellery.com) for updates before planning to visit me at ‘Unconfirmed’ shows.

I hope you’ve all enjoyed a restful and restorative winter. I’m looking forward to warmer winds and the opportunity to connect with many of you this coming season.

All the best until then…

Sincerely,

Rachel Joy VanRooyen.
